Born Different, Built Strong – Why I Speak to Every Age About Overcoming Adversity

Some people collect stamps, spoons, or motorcycles. I collect stories — the kind you don’t expect to live through, let alone laugh about. My life has been a masterclass in overcoming adversity, from being born with a limb difference to facing breast cancer and coming out the other side with more grit — and more laughter — than ever.

Me At Five

In addition to the limb difference of my right arm and hand, I also have an underdeveloped right torso and a drifting right eye. People often ask if this was caused by thalidomide — a drug once given to pregnant women to relieve morning sickness. The answer is no. Doctors never gave my parents an explanation, but in recent years I’ve wondered if it might be Poland Syndrome — a rare congenital condition affecting muscle development on one side of the body. It seems to fit my body type.

Labels came early. As a girl growing up in the 60s, I was called a tomboy for playing hockey and tackle football, a “freak” by some, “disabled” by others. I never liked labels — unless they were on a good rock album.

Finding my first job wasn’t easy. Back then, résumés were mailed in response to newspaper ads, and phone interviews often went well—until the in-person meeting. The moment the hiring manager’s eyes dropped to my arm, I knew. I’d seen that look since childhood, and it said everything without a word: you don’t have a chance.

Chemo days

At 50, life threw me another challenge: breast cancer. I went through a modified radical mastectomy, chemo, and more medical terms than anyone should have to memorize.

Somewhere in the middle of that storm, I decided life was too short to wait for the “right moment” — so I learned to ride a motorcycle with one hand. I had developed a passion for motorcycles as a little girl and always thought "some day".

I had already been playing guitar using a prosthetic since I was a pre-teen, so after many years, it was time to add something new.

From Boardroom to Back Roads

Before becoming a full-time speaker, I spent 35 years in the corporate world — starting as an Order Desk Clerk and eventually leading a team of 70 at one of the top engineering firms in the world. I learned that the best leaders hire with their ears, not just their eyes — by listening to people’s potential instead of judging their cover page.

I also learned how to prove people wrong… repeatedly. From those who thought I couldn’t handle “serious” leadership roles, to those who underestimated me because of my appearance — nothing fueled me more than showing them otherwise.

Who I Speak To (Hint: Everyone)

People often ask: “Angie, are you an inspirational speaker for seniors, youth, the disability community, or corporate audiences?”My answer? Yes.

  • Youth – Finding Your First Gear. You don’t have to wait to be “ready.” You’re already enough.

  • Seniors – Life in the Fast Lane. “Slowing down” is just a gear change, and laughter is fuel.

  • Disability & Resilience – Not a Box to Check. Ability is more than what people see. Adaptation is strength.

  • Corporate – Hiring Beyond the Résumé. Look past the paper — your best hire may be the one you almost overlooked.
